| Hello there. I'm David St Vincent and I am a travel writer, with credits including the National Geographic Society, Insight Guides, The Independent and Lonely Planet. Among other things, I have written about nearly 350 destinations and topics for the National Geographic Society covering more than 80 countries and territories, was the sole author of the first travel guidebook published on Iran since the Islamic Revolution, am the main author of Insight Guide Romania and contributed to a small team that successfully relaunched the website of Visit London, the UK capital's tourist board. So I am used to matching or exceeding the highest standards in the travel-publishing business. But as I'm terribly British, I am hopeless at telling the world how wonderful I am. Fortunately for me, a few of my editors have been kind enough to write glowing testimonials. For most of my life an equal passion for travel and writing has kept me away from what many people would call a proper job. I have travelled to around 50 countries and lived or worked in or written about many of them, from the most familiar to the most obscure. As a writer my passion is for travel and as a traveller my passion is for writing. My guide to Iran was the first published in English after the Islamic Revolution and helped open the country up to visitors. Along the way it gained the praise of Robert D Kaplan. One of the world's most distinguished foreign correspondents, he said: In the 1990s, when it was particularly hard to get visas to Iran—and much of the information about that country emerged out of seminars in Washington-the best thing to read on the subject was Iran: A Travel Survival Kit by David St Vincent. I enjoy the opportunity that travel writing offers to penetrate the façade of a country. While others pop in and out of a country whenever there is a transient news opportunity, I prefer to stay long enough to get to know the country first. Destinations Wanderlust—or sometimes the relentless pursuit of cheap vodka—has drawn me to around 50 countries and territories across five continents.
